Setting the Standards

On the heels of U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra’s challenge to utility companies to launch a “Green Button” that would ensure consumers have timely access to their own energy data in consumer-friendly and computer-friendly formats, the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) has announced the launch of their Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI) website to support the Green Button Initiative. NAESB hopes to support the development of innovative products that will allow consumers to better understand their energy usage and to make more informed decisions about their energy usage.  The new website will provide detailed information about the standard, how it may be accessed and a tool kit to allow entrepreneurs and other interested parties the ability to design applications based upon the standard.

After presenting WattQuiz at the Cleanweb Hackathon in NYC, Mr. Chopra brought light to a very good point.  “With regard to tariff data, I assume that none of that is standardized across all the utilities in the country,”Chopra said during Q&A, ” so how do you actually get that tariff data?”  To which we answered, we collected it and standardized it.  It has been Genability’s stance from the start that empowering consumers with energy knowledge allows them the ability to make smarter energy decisions.  We are committed to supporting Green Button and all ESPI standards.  That is why we are Green Button ready–now Genability customers can upload Green Button data to our web-based and API platforms.
